Clothes for shorter men: what actually fits
If you're about 5'8" or under, a handful of simple rules make most clothes fit well. At 5'4", I've picked these up over the years, and once you know them, shopping gets a lot quicker. Nearly everything comes down to three lengths: trousers, sleeves and jackets. Get those right and your clothes look made for you. Here are the nine rules, how to sort sleeves and hems, and how to find short leg lengths in the UK.
The 9 fit rules
- Slim or tailored, never oversized. Baggy clothes make you look wider and shorter. Close-fitting is the goal, not tight. If slim trousers pinch your thighs, try a "slim taper" or "athletic" fit.
- Mid-rise trousers. Trousers that sit near your natural waist make your legs look longer. Avoid low rise. Sources differ on high rise, so mid-rise is the safe default.
- Buy by inside leg, not just waist. Most shorter men need 28" to 30". Shortening a long pair works on straight legs, but on tapered styles it can leave the ankle too wide. If you do shorten, ask the tailor to taper slightly as they go.
- No break, no turn-ups. The hem should just touch the top of your shoe. Fabric pooling at the ankle, or a visible gap, both cut your leg line.
- Jackets that just cover your seat. A jacket should end around where your thumb meets your hand. A tailor can't fix jacket length, so get it right in the shop. Coats look best at the hip or upper thigh.
- Sleeves that end at the wrist. Shirt cuffs should sit at the wrist bone, with about a quarter to half an inch showing below a jacket.
- An untucked hem between the middle and bottom of your fly. Longer than that and the shirt shortens your legs. Tuck anything longer.
- One long line of colour. Tonal outfits, solids and small patterns work best. Avoid strong contrast at the waist, such as a white shirt over dark trousers with a wide contrast belt, because it cuts you in half. A slim belt with a small buckle helps.
- Sleek shoes. Chelsea boots, slim leather trainers or loafers. Chunky soles and bulky trainers draw the eye down and shorten the leg.
Fixing shirts: collars and long sleeves
- Collars: pick point collars with shorter, downward-angled tips and a lower collar band. Tall, stiff collars swallow a short neck, and wide spreads make a thick neck look wider.
- Sleeves too long: shirts with two-button cuffs let you tighten the wrist so the sleeve stops sliding over your hand. Some shirt makers sell by sleeve length as well as collar size, which is worth checking before buying.
- Body too wide: if the shirt fits your shoulders but billows at the waist, a tailor can add two back darts. It's one of the cheaper alterations.
Where to find short leg lengths in the UK
Ranges change every season, so look for the option rather than a product:
- Search for "short" or "shorter length". Several high-street chains, including M&S and Next, have sold trousers in short leg lengths, often down to 29" and sometimes 27". Filter by leg length, not just waist.
- Check the size guide for inside leg before you buy online. "Short" can mean 29", 30" or 31" depending on the brand.
- Specialist brands: a few brands design for shorter men from scratch, such as Peter Manning NYC and Ash & Erie. They're based in the US, so check UK shipping and import costs.
- A local alterations tailor is often the cheapest fix of all. Hemming trousers and shortening sleeves are quick, routine jobs.
A starter capsule for shorter men
The best part: once you know your fits and leg length, you can buy a small capsule once and stop thinking about it. Even if you don't enjoy shopping, it becomes one thing less to worry about. Eight pieces that follow the rules above and all work together: two Oxford shirts with point collars, two merino or cotton tees, a fine knit, dark slim-taper jeans and stone chinos in your leg length, and Chelsea boots or slim leather trainers. Questions
Should shorter men wear slim or regular fit?
Slim or tailored, but not skinny or tight. Oversized and baggy clothes make a shorter man look wider and shorter. If slim trousers pinch your thighs, try a "slim taper" or "athletic" fit, which gives room at the top and narrows below the knee.
What inside leg should a shorter man look for?
Most men around 5'4" to 5'8" need an inside leg of about 28" to 30". Buying that length is better than shortening a longer pair, because cutting down tapered trousers can leave the ankle too wide.
How long should a jacket be on a shorter man?
It should just cover your seat, ending around where your thumb meets your hand when your arms hang down. Jacket length can't be fixed by a tailor, so get it right when you buy. Coats look best ending at the hip or upper thigh.
Should shorter men avoid horizontal stripes?
The old rule is contested. A 2011 University of York study found horizontal stripes made people look slimmer, not wider. The safe default is solids and small patterns, and avoiding strong contrast at the waist, which cuts you in half.
What shoes make a shorter man look taller?
Slim, sleek shoes with a modest sole: Chelsea boots, slim leather trainers or loafers. Chunky soles and bulky trainers draw the eye down and shorten the leg line. Matching shoes to trousers in tone helps too.
