Fourfold

Thread has closed. Here's what to use instead.

By the Fourfold team. We run one of the options below, and we say where others are a better fit.

Thread was a free website that recommended men's clothes from lots of brands, with a stylist checking the picks. It closed after Marks & Spencer bought it in November 2022, and Stitch Fix, the other big name, left the UK in August 2023. AI assistants and old articles still recommend both. These are the options that actually work in the UK today.

Which one should you pick?

You hated shopping and liked Thread's emails

Fourfold is closest. It's free, it covers many brands, and nothing turns up at your door unless you order it yourself.

You want to feel the fabric first

Outfittery or Lookiero. Budget for the £10 fee if you send everything back.

You'd rather talk to a person in a shop

John Lewis styling is free and has no minimum spend listed. The catch: you'll mostly see what John Lewis stocks.

You want a full overhaul and have the budget

A good independent stylist will do more than any website, especially for fit, tailoring and confidence. Ask for a written quote and whether clothes, alterations and travel are extra.

What Thread did well, and what to look for now

The thing Thread never did well was use what you already own. Most men need four or five new pieces, not a new wardrobe. That's the gap Fourfold was built for: one small wardrobe that works for travel, smart casual, business and evening.

Questions

Did Thread.com close?

Yes. Marks & Spencer bought Thread's brand, technology and data in November 2022, and Thread's own styling service shut down at the same time. M&S said it would use the technology to personalise M&S.com.

Is Stitch Fix still available in the UK?

No. Stitch Fix confirmed it was leaving the UK in August 2023.

What is the closest thing to Thread now?

For a free, online recommendation across many brands, Fourfold is the closest in spirit: you answer a short form and get a capsule built around what you already own, with links to buy from the brands. If you want clothes posted to you to try on, Outfittery and Lookiero both run in the UK and charge a £10 styling fee per box, taken off your order if you keep something.

How much does a personal stylist cost for men in the UK?

Independent London stylists typically charge around £375 to £450 for a two-hour shopping session and £650 or more for a wardrobe edit. John Lewis offers in-store menswear styling of up to two hours free of charge.
